30 Second Game Review: Sniper Elite V2

You know that nagging headache you just can't get rid of, that's what it looks like

Now as some of you will have worked out I record all of these videos in batches and then release them over time.

That means that sometime I continue playing the game after I have finished editing. Once in a blue moon my opinion changes between time of recording and time of release, this is the case with Sniper Elite V2.

After clocking a little more time with it I think I may have been a little harsh with it. Am I going to re-record this? Hells no! Every complaint I had was valid just perhaps not as bad as i made out. The kill cam is interesting for a while then it gets annoying, The soundtrack really is shocking & the AI is either a so retarded you expect it to play catch with a grenade or so intelligent you don’t stand a chance.

Personally for me this is a grab it when it drops in price type of game, you will enjoy it for a while as a change of pace but it doesn’t have all the much longevity

Why is it always the incredibly simple games that end up drawing me in the most?

I dont know what it is about blitz type games that get me so addicted. Perhaps its the quick in and out nature of them, Perhaps its the simplicity of them, But more than likely its the fact that the all allow you to compete against your friends and I like to win!

Diamond Dash is the latest one to come out and it really is a very simple little game. Find 3 blocks or more of the same colour on the screen and pop them. The larger the block the higher the score and that all you need to know. that and the fact that you only have 60 seconds to set as high a score as you can.

Later in the game you unlock power-ups, like bombs that will blow up blocks around them or some that add extra time to your clock.

Really this is such an addictive little title and as it is completely free I can only say go grab it and enjoy it

Drinky Talky Thingy Episode #71: Diablo III Destroyed My Podcast!

Well we have been preparing for this week for nearly a year now, we knew that when Diablo III finally released my interest in other gaming news would probably be a bit low.

However it seem that our preparations were simply not good enough, despite our best laid plans stories for the show were selected only 20 minutes prior to recording.

This meant that unlike usual where only Gow has no idea about the details of the story – I was not able to fill in while he quickly scan-read the screen to catch up.

Not that we let this stop us recording, instead we stumbled our way through the news about Sega skipping Gamescom, we blagged our way past the subject of Portal 2′s Testing Initiative, We pretended we knew about the fact the Xbox may finally be getting a browser – Oh and I talked about Diablo, A Lot!

Anyway all that and much more in this episode of the Drinky Talky Thingy.

The Talky Thingy: Does the Worms series need a class system?

Is it just me or does the Heavy look like its about to eat the Scout?

Worms is a brilliant series of games, it’s been releasing new versions for almost as long as I have been playing games.

Aside from a terrible detour into 3D that is better forgotten about they have all been very solid games using pretty much the same formula. Sure their armouries have gotten bigger and the AI is not quite so retarded anymore, but at its core it has always been the same game.

In the next version however they are planning to mix up one of the key mechanics and this is what we want you opinions on. (Worms Revolution to introduce class-based mechanics -Destructoid)

While other games have had worms that are all of the same type, Worms Revolution is looking to add classes to the worms in order to make for more tactical gameplay. Your classic worm will become the soldier with all its current abilities, but joining him will be:

The Heavy – Slow moving but soaks up and gives more damage
The Scout – Able to get around fast but takes more damage and hits a little softer
The Scientist – A Support type role, offering healing and making super-weapons

While we agree this does bring a good tactical element to the gameplay that could work out well online, Personally I am not sure it is needed. Its not a game that is meant for online play – it meant to be played in a room where all the players are and are getting drunk (See: Worms:Reloaded Drinking Game » 8-Bit Alliance) and in those situations simple is better.

30 Second Game Review: Samurai vs Zombies Defense

Just once would it hurt for the dead to stay that way?

Samurai vs Zombies Defense is a very simple yet very addictive Tower defence game on the iOS and Android. You take the place of a Samurai defending his village from wave after wave of Zombie.

As you go up the levels you are helped in your task by Farmers, Archers & other Samurai’s that you are able to call in with the points earnt from killing the zombies.

Now while I really did enjoy this game and very much recommend you grab a copy asap, 30 Seconds was not enough to sum it up.

So instead I am going to point you in the direction of fellow YouTuber VGJFelix, who was the one that recommended the game to me in the first place and his far superior review of the game Asus Transformer Prime: Great Android App # 23.5 Samurai’s Vs Zombies (Extended Look) on the Asus Transformer.

Drinky Talky Thingy Episode #70: Gow never stops eating!

This was going to be a picture of Fiona, but Gow was pretty sure she would rip my nuts off if I did that - So here is a Lego

I am going to have to start with an apology for the sound in this episode. Not due to any technical issue mind, but because Gow seemed entirely incapable of putting down the pile of munchies he had with him.

What makes it more frustrating is the fact that he has always been this much of a gannet, at least as long I have known him and he never seems to put on any weight – I make no apologies for the fact that I can’t wait till the little git finally hits 25 and nature catches up with him.

However that is not really why you are here is it? You want to know about things like the X-Box Contract bundle, SWTOR losing a lot of players & Beyond Good& Evil 2 being back on the cards. I guess we could also throw in some news about Diablo III and put forward the topic for this weeks Talky Thingy.

The Talky Thingy: Will the next generation of consoles fail?

The next gen console will apparently double as nightlights

As part of the Drinky Talky Thingy podcast we have added a new feature, The Talky Thingy.

Each week we pick one of the interesting articles for the week and basically ask the opinions of the listeners. We do this because if they are listening to a gaming podcast they clearly are interested in the area, so why shouldn’t they get a soapbox too?

This weeks story is this one from IGN http://uk.games.ign.com/articles/122/1223836p1.html where an analyst has suggested that the next generation of consoles is likely to fail to live up to the expectations set by this generation.

He does indeed paint a bleak picture for the console gaming scene, but part of me says he might be right.

If this generation is more evolution that revolution, if the new consoles don’t bring anything shockingly brilliant to the table & if the price range is as high as its expected to be then I do not think people will be in all that much of a rush to upgrade. People will happily plod along with their current generation mopping up those last new games for it and clearing out that backlog of titles they never quite got round too.

However its not my opinion that matters in this instance, We want yours!

30 Second Game Review: Ski Safari

Because nobody wants to be a second class penguin

Ski Safari by Defiant Developmentis one of the recent class of autorunner games hat are popular on the iOS and andriod.

This one puts you in the place of a skier string to get the hell down a mountain ahead of the avalanche that is chasing him. To do that he is going to have to stay on his feet and not hit any of the hazards that block his journey.

But your not trekking down the mountain alone, along that way you will run into critters such as penguins, eagles & even the odd Yeti, All of which are more then happy to give you a lift for a while as long as you do the same when you find a snowmobile.

What makes this game really addictive is the levelling system. You make your way up the ranks by completing certain challenges such as pulling off 20 back-flips or riding 2 eagles in a row. Some of these are simple but others are just the right kind of challenging that will bring you back again and again

Well worth a shot

30 Second Mists of Pandaria Preview: And Everything Else!

What the hell, this island is a giant Turtle

Well after a whole week of doing Pandaria videos, its time to call an end to it and move back onto to normal programming.

However before I do I want to do a quick once over of all the extra little features that I did not have the time to feature in separate videos of their own.

Things like area of effect looting, Challenge Mode dungeons & Scenario modes, Improved Tooltips. One personal favourite is the improved character creator – this is a much better way to select the various elements of your character design.

Some I will come back to and look at again as the beta progresses – Scenario Modes are one such element as that is only missing as it is not yet in the beta

However that is all for Pandaria for now.

30 Second Mists of Pandaria Preview: Pandaria

Even with a map I still got lost twice exploring it

Well we have come to the end of this Mists of Pandaria special week so it would only be natural to make mention of the continent of Pandaria itself.

This is where players will be spending much of their time in the expansion and while some areas of it are still unavailable in the beta, I have had a good old explore of the zones that can be reached and they are brilliant.

Blizzard are very much proving the saying ‘practice makes perfect’ true as each expansion they get better at building the new zones. Unfortunately none of the video footage I managed to get while doing so managed to sum up the area properly, So I found some screen-shots that did.

I even left my ugly mug off the screen this time so you can fully enjoy them.

30 Second Mists of Pandaria Preview: Monk

Chug! Chug! Chug!

When the Pandaren rejoin the rest of Azeroth they are not just bringing with them their exceedingly good Pandaren Brew – though those will be much appreciated – they will also bring with then the Monk class.

This is a new hybrid class that specialising in hand to hand combat, though they will use weapons for deadly finishing blows when they are required.

Their three specialisations are:

Mistweaver – A Healing focus but still capable of some DPS
Windwalker – A Melee DPS
BrewMaster – A Tank

While I have never had a real interest in Tanking (I did it for a little while back in Burning Crusade), one thing I am very keen on is the title of BrewMaster – Finally a title worthy of my DrunkenGamer character.

So when the game launches DrunkenGamer, the Pandaren Brewmaster will be wandering around the bars in Azeroth!

Seriously there is something not right about the people that Gow works with. I have never known an office where so many people are ill so often.

With Gow unable to make it round to my place to record (also I didn’t want his damn plauge) we decided to make use of the technology availible to us, we fired up skype and set to it that way.

Strangely that seemed to keep us a bit more focused as we managed to get quite a bit covered. We were unhappy to debunk last weeks TimeSplitters rumours, We talked a bit about the Diablo III launch event, We covered the confirmation Rayman Legends and briefly touched on the weeks Wii U news.

30 Second Mists of Pandaria Preview: Talents

Everyone has a talent, not all are useful

Now they may have only recently simplified the talent system in World of Warcraft recently, it seams that has not stopped them taking another look at it in Mists of Pandaria.

This version of the talent system seem to have taken some serious influence from the one that was found in the Diablo III beta. As you reach each tier of the tree you are given a selection of 3 spells to choose from.

Each of these spells will have a similar nature to them. So in the video you will see the monk talents and all the spells in the first tier are related to modifications of the ‘Roll’ ability they have. All of these skills are useful and have more to do with your personal playstyle that your specialisation choice.

This will mean less people arguing about the ‘Perfect Build’ (oh who am I kidding they will still be there) and more about which is the most fun to play.

30 Second Mists of Pandaria Preview: Pet Battles

Raptor vs Tree, who will win? Only one way to find out, FIGHT!!

Those faithful little companions, your mini Diablo, your little grey owl, even your little singing sunflowers if you finished the quest to get one, They have all been at your side since the very start of World of Warcraft. While they are fun to have along for the ride they don’t really do much more than look pretty.

Well that is until now, Mists of Pandaria will be adding a Pet Battle System. This system will see your vanity pets going into battle pokemon style.

I know its lazy writing to jump straight to a comparison but really there is no better way to describe this new system. Each type of mini-pet will now have its own levelling bar and as it grows in strength by competing in battles it will unlock new skills.

Each pet’s skills will differ based on its pet class, from flying to elemental, mechanical to beast, they will all have a base set as well as some pets having their own unique abilities.

Aside from making use of all the vanity pets in the game already, there are now 500 to be collected in total. These will come from various locations such as vendors or achievements, but many will have to be caught in the wild by finding them and battling them.

What makes that bit interesting is that they have confirmed that some of the pets will only be available at certain times of the day, or in certain weather types in the zone – so the truly OCD hunters amongst you will have your work cut out for you.

30 Second Mists of Pandaria Preview: Pandaren

Peaceful and carrying beer, this is my kinda panda

As I mentioned on Friday there is too much information to get across about the new World of Warcraft expansion, Mists of Pandaria, that I just physically could not cram it all into on video. I tried a few times but in the last one I was talking that fast that I had just become a barely audible squeak.

So this entire week will be dedicated to the various features of the game, from the new Monk class to the Pet-Battles.

But naturally if your going to start with a game named after newest race, it only makes sense to make the base the first video in the set on these lovable panda people.

While it may not seem that way, the Pandaren have actually been a part of Warcraft lore for a very long time. Sure they may have started as a joke but they soon evolved way beyond that, the lore about this race is greater that that of some of the games previous playable races (Check out a lot of it http://www.wowwiki.com/Pandaren).

However for reasons that will remain unknown, Blizzard held back this race until now. All I have to say is that it is about damn time!

What is good is that they have changed the faction mechanic, Pandaren are able to become members of either faction. This choice is made at the end of your starting zone quest-chain and is none reversible (at this point anyway) but its still good to have the option of have this race whichever side of the faction fence you have been on all these years.

Diablo III with an X-Box Controller Revisit Using XPadder

That was one hell of a curry last night

With the Diablo III beta finally coming to its natural end on May 1st, I like the rest of you will be plunged into the nightmare of having to wait till the 15th to get my fix of carnage.

However before it shut down I did say that I would go and take a second look at playing the game with an Xbox controller.

While the first video showed that it did indeed work, I used a program that was so obscure that nobody had ever heard of it not even me and I was the one using it.

Thankfully though in the comments youtube user THUND3R1871 suggested that I take a look at XPadder (http://xpadder.com/) and as it only costs £6 I thought I would give it a shot.

Boy am I glad I did, this little one man project is exactly what the doctor ordered. So much simpler to configure than the previous little tool I found, I was up and running around sanctuary in a matter of minutes. One other improvement is that it fully registers all of the controllers buttons meaning I could have everything i needed mapped.

As for the gameplay, once you get used to using the controller it is incredibly fluid. So much so that you are left wondering why there is no native controller support – but I’m sure Blizzard will add that when they finish the console edition of the game.

Below is a video of me using the controller with the game and having a quick play to show it working, I even cap the video off with a overview of the things that have changed in the game since I last recorded a video of it. Hope this helps some people out.

Its actually coming! My word its not as if they have not kept us waiting for long enough.

Now, okay so we have known that the Diablo III has had a release day of May15th – but this is Blizzard we are talking about so I never fully trust their release dates.

However the other day the press release arrived in my mail box confirming the special launch events for this release. While I wouldn’t put it past them to push it back, I think you can pretty much assure that it is actually going to release

As part of the build-up, they have had a reveal site running here that has been revealing each of the classes, videos for which are available after the break.

Who would have thought this was the face of a crazy person

If you have looked at this video you will no doubt have notices that it is not actually 30 seconds long.

The plan was to do a Mists of Pandaria preview today, but after an hour of trying to fit everything I wanted/needed to say into 30 seconds, I realised it just was not possible. Not wanting to leave you without a video I instead have fallen back on the old faithful clip show.

So enjoy the full collection of my craziness, the last out-takes show was a bit limiting by keeping it to 30 seconds as well.

Next week will be Mists of Pandaria week – all 4 videos will be on different elements of the beta and my take on them so you have that to look forward too.

Drinky Talky Thingy Episode #68: Meandering in the minds of madmen

Just when we thought we were gaining a bit of a following, our ugly mugs went and scared them all away

Well by now you know that our planning for this show goes about as far as selecting some stories, telling Gow to turn up and reminding him he needs to bring beer with him.

This means that what you hear in the podcast is completely unscripted. Sometimes you wouldn’t realise that as we seem like we know what we are talking about – then there are times like this show.We left the main topics so many times during recording that I am not even sure we covered all of the things we had short listed.

I’m pretty sure we managed to cover the God of War VI announcement, I think we managed to get something about Torchlight in there & I hope we managed to squeeze in some talk on Timesplitters 4. However at this point I can not promise anything.

What makes this a little different to normal is the fact that we left a webcam running for the whole show – so our slow decline into madness is even more documented than usual. Expect that on YouTube as soon as im done editing it.

30 Second Game Review: Limbo

The other week I asked for suggestions on games to do 30 second reviews on. YouTube user QWRGN suggested Limbo, who am I to say know when its such a good game?

Limbo was originally released by Playdead studios as part of the 2010 Summer of Arcade on XBLA and got rave reviews, not least by in that months issue of Thirteen1 (http://www.thirteen1.com). Since then it has been released on a whole host of formats, all of which leading to equally good reviews.

The game puts you in the shoes of a small child trying to save his sister/stay alive set in an incredibly styled world where everything seems to be out to kill you. One thing i loved about this game is the fact that it deliberately tried to throw you off with having buttons that are not and swings that can kill you.

Well worth having if you haven’t already

30 Second Game Preview: Diablo III

Nope that is not a typo in the title, while I know that Diablo III is close enough to launch for some people to consider this a review – that does not happen until after launch for me.

However this weekend saw the Open Beta for Diablo III happen and meant that I even got to play the game with some people I actually knew.

Like all Blizzard games before it this has one hell of a legacy to live up to, Diablo II is still being played by by quite a lot of people daily. Personally I think they have done a brilliant job of walking that line between making the game approachable for the newbie and still give the old-school players something to get thier teeth into.

The story so far (it only had part of the first act available) seems good and has a lot of potential for going forward, lets hope it lives up to it.

30 Second Game Review: The 2D Aventures of Rotating Octopus Character

The 2D Adventures of Rotating Octopus Character is not only a tongue twister, it is also the title of the first game by Dakko Dakko – the creators of Floating Cloud God Saves the Pilgrims.

It was this game that put me on to their madness, something I am eternally grateful for as it amuses me no end.

The game puts you in the place of a Octopus and after all of his little octopi friends are blown around the world he has not option but to try and save them, but how? Well by simply spinning up, sticking to the walls and jumping all over the place at great speed.

In no time at all he is off saving his pals, but its a tough old world out there for a dizzy octopus and he will find himself dodging all kinds of hazards.

This is a brilliant game and well worth having.

Show me the way to Tifa's Bar!

I wish I had the amount of time spare that must have been required to make this, and the skill, oh and I guess the patience would probably help as well.

What am I talking about? Some clever so and so managing to recreate a large scale replica of the Final Fantasy VII city Midgar.

I am always impressed by large scale Minecraft builds, so much skill involved in them, but this one stands out to me because of my love of FF VII – It really is a very well done map.

30 Second Game Review: Blades of Time

While not offically classified as a Sequel, Blades of Time is at the very least the spiritual successor to X-Blades.

While the game has maintained its lead character Ayumi and its hack and slash combat, most of the rest was left behind as to be honest that was not a good game.

Blades of Time however is pretty solidly made. There are some times when the controls have be a little frustrating but the graphics are good, the combat is enjoyable & some of the new mechanics are really useful.

The ability to rewind a few times to effectively make clones of yourself to take on enemies in new ways is one that stands out.

Oh and She still has a very good Ass

What the hell happened to the games industry? So many lawsuits!

Something strange is going on in the gaming world.

Everybody seems to be suing someone about something and responding to that with counter-suits. The amount of insults we throw at the people we talk about in these shows I really am surprised we have not had a lawsuit land at our feet yet.

We did get one noise pollution order but we managed to shake that off by agreeing to never sing again.

Anyway in this show we looked at the evidence behind some Command & Conquer rumours, we deliberated over whether the consoles should charge more for their services, we look at the facts regarding Nintendo’s No-Show at this years GamesCom and declared Dark Souls for the PC Guilty of being absolutely retarded.
